A quick shift in focus
After some preliminary searching about, it turned out to be easier to integrate the forum software and private message systems together. So, hey, that part’s done! It did mean that matchmaking got pushed to the back burner for a bit, but now that the major hassles of installation and configuration of those big systems are complete I should be free to start digging into that again.
The site is really shaping up, and while I’m still adding two new tasks for every one I knock off progress is being made in leaps and bounds. The next step will be getting Geospatial support built in so we can find out how far away from you people are! Background work is ongoing to figure out the very best way to match people up, without being a huge hassle. We’ve had a lot of great ideas so far, and are baking them down to distilled goodness.
The current target date for going into Beta is Nov. 1, 2010. It’s pretty aggressive, though, so we’ll see. The high-level roadmap features for that release are:
- Registration
- Account activation
- Lost password retrieval
- Forums
- Private messaging
- Basic profile management
- Match search
- Geolocation
- A way to get in touch with us
- Basic reputation system
As you can see, we’ve made a pretty big dent in the to-do list already. As it stands, I expect the early beta to be rough around the edges, but I hope that with the support off the community we’ll be able to iron out the issues pretty quickly.
Development Update
Work is going along nicely on the overall site design and registration wizard. I’m trying to keep the initial amount of information we request low, to get users into the site as soon as possible while still getting the minimum amount of useful information. From here, work will commence on building up the matchmaking engine, and then mail.
With registration, mail, and matchmaking in place I should be able to provide a beta for anyone interested in early adoption and trying things out. Before we roll a version live, though, I’ll want to add in a beta if the reputation system and do an integration with some manner of bulletin board software, or write my own. Again.
We’ll see, but so far things are looking good!

Dev Field Day – Day 1
Brian here, and ready to dig in. Today is the first real day of site development! The servers are ready, the dev environment and source control are set up, and spirits are high. I have a week off from work to cram as much code into the site as possible. With any luck I will have a skeleton user / profile system in place today, with registration, editing, and all of that good junk.

Welcome to the TLC blog
TLC has just entered development, mere moments ago the initial directory structures were built out development has begun. As you might expect, there’s not a lot of news at the moment. Initial development focus is going to be on the user system, and then I will be moving on to profiles and groups. When I have time I’ll post a development roadmap that you can follow to see how I’m tracking for a Beta release. In the meantime, I’ll try to post now and again as things get accomplished.
